St. Louis, Mo. – This afternoon the Columbia College men's soccer team was back on the field when they traveled to St. Louis, Missouri, to take on Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) University in an AMC matchup. The Cougars, who came into this game with a 2-0 record in conference play, were able to extend their winning streak to five straight games after defeating the Hornets by a final score of 3-1. With the win, Columbia improves to 6-2 on the season.
The Cougars came out in the first half of the game and took it to the Hornets early. They were able to control the tempo to start the match and applied a heavy amount of pressure to Harris-Stowe's back line. Columbia was finally able to take a 1-0 lead in the match 17 minutes into the game when Ximo Gill blasted a shot through the Hornets keeper's hands and into the back of the net for his second goal of the season. Michael Mayberry added his second goal of the season 19 minutes later when he broke away from the Hornets defender and slipped the ball past the keeper and into the back of the net to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead heading into the halftime break.
In the second half of the game, the Cougars came out and controlled the tempo early. They were able to add a third goal to their lead 22 minutes into the half when the Hornets keeper made a save on a Columbia shot but the ball bounced to Matheus Lima who was able to place the ball into the back of the net for his first goal of the season. Harris-Stowe battled back and were able to cut the Cougars lead to 3-1 but that was as close as they would get as the Cougars closed out the match to solidify their fifth straight win.
Collin Baker was in goal for Columbia tonight as the freshman keeper made two saves in his first win of the season.
The Cougars are back in action on Friday, September 22nd when they play host to the St. Louis College of Pharmacy (Mo.) Eutectics in an AMC matchup. The game is set to start at 7 p.m. on R. Marvin Owen's Field.
