St. Louis, Mo. – The fifth ranked Columbia College women's soccer team was back in action today when they traveled to St. Louis, Missouri, to take on Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) University in an AMC matchup. The Cougars, who came into this game with a 7-0 record on the season, were able to stay undefeated on the year as they defeated the Hornets by a final score of 4-0 to improve to 3-0 in conference play.
Columbia College came out in the first half and dominated from the opening whistle. They were able to get off seven shots in the first 16 minutes of the contest but were unable to find the back of the net as the Hornets keeper made three big saves. The Cougars were finally able to break into the scoring column 24 minutes into the contest when Laurie Frew ripped a shot into the top right corner of the goal for her team leading 10th tally of the season. Columbia College continued to play well as the half progressed and added a second goal just four minutes later when Joanna Taylor received a ball over the top from her sister Sarah and calmly placed it into the back of the net for her second goal of the season to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead. Columbia added one final goal in the half from Abigail Meyer and held a 3-0 lead at the halftime break.
In the second half of the game, the Cougars once again controlled the tempo early as they had two shots on goal in the first eight minutes of the period. However, they were unable to score until there were 15 minutes remaining in the contest when Kelsey Mirts finished off her eighth goal of the season after playing a give-and-go with Laurie Frew inside the box to give Columbia a 4-0 lead. The Hornets did their best to get back into the game down the final stretch of the contest but were not able to get anything going as the Cougars kept them out of the back of the net to solidify their sixth shutout of the season.
Madison Boyken and Erin Jones split time in goal tonight for Columbia as the two combined for their eighth win of the season.
The Cougars are back in action on Friday, September 22nd when they play host to the St. Louis College of Pharmacy Eutectics in an AMC match. The game is set to start at 4:30 p.m. on R. Marvin Owen's Field.
