Cougars Fall to Spartans in Double Overtime

Columbia, Mo. – The 19th ranked Columbia College women's soccer team was back in action tonight when they played host to the Missouri Baptist University Spartans in the AMC Women's Soccer Game of the Week. The Cougars were defeated by the Spartans by a final score of 2-1 in double overtime to fall to 9-4 on the season and 7-1 in conference play.

Missouri Baptist got off to a quick start in this one as it took them just over two minutes to get on the board and take a 1-0 lead in the contest. The Cougars battled back and were able to tie the game at one just 11 minutes later when Emma Laney was able to volley a ball out of the air and into the back of the net for her second tally of the season. The Cougars continued to push the tempo as the half progressed but were unable to capitalize on their scoring chances as the score remained 1-1 heading into the halftime break. Columbia College out shot Missouri Baptist 4-1 in the half putting three of their four shots on target.

The Cougars came out in the second half and controlled the possession for the first 15 minutes of the period. They created several scoring opportunities in the half but were unable to find the back of the net as the Spartans keeper made several saves to keep the score tied at one. Columbia came close to scoring late in the period, putting a shot off the post, but ultimately the score remained tied at one at the end of regulation.

The Cougars applied a heavy amount of pressure in the first overtime period, posting three shots against the Spartans, but could not find the back of the net and the game entered a second overtime. It took the Spartans just five minutes into the second overtime to score the game winning goal as they were able to capitalize on a free kick opportunity just outside the box to hand Columbia their first conference loss of the season.

Kate Marshall and Erin Jones split time in goal for the Cougars tonight as the two combined to make one save in the contest.

The women's soccer team is back in action on Wednesday, October 17th when they travel to Parkville, Missouri, to take on the Park (Mo.) University Pirates in an AMC matchup. The game is set to start at 5 p.m.
