Box Score Columbia, Mo. – This evening the Columbia College women's soccer team was back in action when they traveled to Parkville, Missouri to battle the Park University Pirates in the AMC Game of the Week. The Cougars were able to defeat the Pirates 4-1 to improve to 10-4 on the season and 8-1 in conference play.
Columbia did not waste much time getting things going as they hit the net on the first shot they took in the game. With 38:51 on the clock, Kelsey Mirts connected with Molly Klein to put the Cougars up 1-0 early in the match. As the half progressed, Columbia's defense continued to protect, keeping the Pirates off the board. A rocket off the foot of Samantha Bassler gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead with about 25 minutes until the break. The score would remain 2-0 Cougars at the half. Columbia had five shots with four on goal, while Park had six shots with three on goal. Jones grabbed three saves in the half for the Cougars and Alyssa Gregory, Pirate goalkeeper, had two of her own.
About 10 minutes into the second half, Lucy Kingsley was assisted by Molly Klein to extend the Cougars lead 3-0. As the second half continued, the Pirates were able to knock one in, cutting the score 3-1. To top off the match, Molly Burke fed the ball to Klein who grabbed her second goal of the game giving the Cougars a 4-1 lead. The deficit was too much for the Pirates to overcome as Columbia secured the victory.
Erin Jones was in goal for the Cougars as she recorded eight saves in the contest this evening.
The women's soccer team is back in action on Saturday, October 20th when they host the Harris-Stowe State University Hornets in an AMC matchup. The match will kickoff at 12 p.m. at R. Marvin Owens Field.
