Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Cougars Sting Hornets 3-0

Columbia, Mo. – This afternoon the Columbia College women's soccer team was back in action when they hosted the Harris-Stowe State University Hornets in an AMC matchup. The Cougars were able to shutout the Hornets 3-0 to improve to 11-4 on the season and 9-1 in conference play.

It was a windy, Fall afternoon at R. Marvin Owens Field as the game was underway. The match proved to be a physical one as multiple fouls were called in the first 15 minutes of play. An aggressive play from Samantha Bassler, would just miss the net as she collided with the goalkeeper. A corner kick from Molly Klein, ricocheted off a few bodies in traffic, resulting in Kelsey Mirts being able to roll one passed the keeper as she tallied her eighth goal of the season. Columbia held a 1-0 lead with 20 minutes before the half. With just over 10 on the clock, Mirts led the initial charge down the field, her cross deflecting off of a Hornet, landing at the feet of Emma Laney who buried one home from about 19 feet out giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead. At the half the score remained 2-0 Columbia. The Cougars had five shots with four on goal, while HSSU had four shots with three on goal in the first.

The Cougars came out firing in the second as Bassler put one off the cross bar to start the second half. As the game progressed, Mallory Holzer displayed a great move, stutter stepping to the right and then blasting one in the back of the net to record the first goal of her career. With Holzer's blast, Columbia extended their lead 3-0 with under 25 minutes left in the game. The Hornets were unable to overcome the Cougars as Columbia notched the 3-0 win.

Erin Jones was in goal for the Cougars as she recorded four saves in the shutout this afternoon.

The women's soccer team is back in action on Tuesday, October 23rd when they travel to St. Louis, Missouri to take on the St. Louis College of Pharmacy Eutectics in an AMC contest. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
