Cougars Fall to Grizzlies in Lawrenceville

Lawrenceville, Ga. – The Columbia College women's soccer team was back in action tonight when they traveled to Lawrenceville, Georgia, to take on the seventh seeded Georgia Gwinnett College Grizzlies in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round. The Cougars were defeated by the Grizzles by a final score of 3-0 to fall to 14-5-2 on the season.

Georgia Gwinnett came out in the first half and were able to score the first goal of the game just 10 minutes in to take a 1-0 lead. The Cougars settled in over the next few minutes of the game and were able to control the possession but had a tough time getting anything going downfield as the Grizzlies played tough defense. Georgia Gwinnett was able to add a second goal with 21 minutes left to play in the half and held a 2-0 lead midway through the period. The Cougars did their best to get back into the game before the halftime break but the Grizzles were able to add one more goal late in the half to take a 3-0 lead into the locker room.

Columbia College came out in the second half and had a tough time getting anything going. They were able to pick it up as the half progressed and put their first shot on target of the period with 30 minutes left to play in the game. They continued to run at the Grizzlies defense but Georgia Gwinnett held their own and the score remained 3-0 late in the contest. The Cougars did their best to get back into the game but the Grizzlies were able to close them out down the stretch to solidify their spot at the final site of the 2018 NAIA National Championships in Orange Beach, Alabama.

Erin Jones and Kate Marshall split time in goal tonight for Columbia as the two combined to make two saves in the contest.

This marks the end of the 2018 Columbia College women's soccer season. The AMC Tournament Champions finished their season with a 14-5-2 record on the year and a 10-1-1 mark in conference play. They will return to the field next fall.
