Women’s Soccer Advances to Semifinals

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College women's soccer team was back on the field tonight when they played host to the Lyon (Ark.) College Scots in the AMC Women's Soccer Championship Quarterfinals. The Cougars were able to defeat the Scots by a final score of 4-0 to improve to 13-4-1 on the season and 11-1-1 in the AMC.

Prior to the start of the match, the American Midwest Conference announced the AMC Academic All-Conference awards. To be eligible for Academic All-Conference honors, student-athletes must be in their second semester at their AMC institution and have at least a 3.0 GPA. For their efforts in the classroom, Abby Meyer, Emma Laney, Erin Jones, Kaitlyn Tambke, Katie Cook, Kelsey Mirts, Lucy Kingsley, Molly Klein, and Samantha Bassler were all recognized. In addition, Katie Cook was named the AMC Champions of Character team.

The Cougars came out in the first half and controlled the possession early in the game. They were able to find the back of the net just 13 minutes into the contest after earning a corner kick. Molly Klein took the corner and found Kelsey Mirts in the center of the box who was able to head the ball past the Scots keeper and into the back of the net for her 13th goal of the season. Columbia College continued to control the pace as the half progressed and were able to pick up a second goal with four minutes left to play in the period when Chloe Hall hit a rocket of a shot from just outside the box. The Scots keeper made the save but the rebound went right to Molly Klein who was able to tap it into the back of the net for her 13th goal of the season. The Cougars tried their best to get one more goal before the half but the score remained 2-0 heading into the halftime break. Columbia outshot Lyon 16-1 in the half and had six shots on target.

The Cougars came out in the second half and were able to add a third goal in the game 17 minutes into the period. Katie Cook had the goal for the Cougars as she was able to rifle a shot from 30 yards out and into the back of the net for her first tally of the season to make the score 3-0. Lucy Kingsley added a fourth goal for the Cougars with just under 14 minutes to play in the game when she was able to finish off a cross from Kelsey Mirts for her eighth goal of the season to extend Columbia's lead to 4-0. Lyon College did their best to get back into the game but the Cougars were able to close out the contest to advance to the semifinals of the AMC Women's Soccer Championships.

Kate Marshall and Erin Jones split time in goal tonight as the two saves in the teams 12th shutout of the season.

The Cougars will be back in action on Monday, November 5th when play host to Park (Mo.) University in the AMC Women's Soccer Championship Semifinals. The game is set to start at 6 p.m. on R. Marvin Owen's Field.
