Cougars Top Eagles 78-61

Columbia, Mo. – This afternoon the 10th ranked Columbia College women's basketball team was back on the court when they hosted the Williams Baptist (Ark.) College Eagles in an AMC matchup. The Cougars defeated the Eagles by a final score of 78-61 to win their 13th straight game. Columbia improves to 19-5 on the season and 17-1 in conference play.

The game was tied at 5 early, but the Cougars would go on an 8-3 run take a 13-8 lead midway through the first. As the quarter progressed, the Eagles would cut the Cougars lead to one with a minute and a half to go. Raegan Wieser led the team with 10 first quarter points as Columbia led 25-22.

Columbia came out in the second looking to shake off the sluggish start. The Eagles were doing a good job of keeping themselves in the game as Columbia was searching for their groove. With a last second steal and bucket from Jordan Alford, the Cougars would lead 41-31 at halftime. Wieser led all scorers with 12 first half points.

Columbia started the second half much better than the first. Their defensive pressure was turned up a notch as they caused multiple Eagle's turnover in the first few minutes of the third. The Cougars used a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 50-33. The Eagles were not giving up as they continued to battle cutting the lead to eight with two minutes to go. The Cougars took advantage of getting to the line as they led 63-50 heading into the fourth. In the final quarter, the Eagles tried to work their way back in the game, but Columbia would remain in control throughout. The Cougars secured their 13th straight victory by a final score of 78-61.

For Columbia, Mai Nienhueser recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. In addition, Raegan Wieser (22), Morgan Brandt (11), and Sarah Walters (10) were all in double digits. Jordan Alford handed out a team high three assists on the afternoon.

Columbia College is back in action on Thursday, February 8th when they travel to Hannibal, Missouri to take on the Hannibal-LaGrange University Trojans in an AMC matchup. The game is set to tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
