Box Score 2 Fullerton, Calif. – This afternoon the second 2018 NAIA Softball Coaches' Top 25 poll was announced and the Cougars who were sixth in the previous poll, came in at eighth after going 4-0 in the past two weeks. The Columbia College softball team was back in action when they traveled to Fullerton, California to take on the Hope International University Royals in a doubleheader. The Cougars fell in the first game by a score of 11-3 and the second game by a final score of 4-1 to move to 11-6 on the season and 6-0 in conference play.
In the first game, the Royals took the early 3-0 lead after the first inning. In the top of the third Columbia would cut the lead to one, but in the bottom of the inning the Royals would tally three runs to hold a 6-2 lead heading into the fourth. The Cougars struggled to battle back as they gave up four runs in the fourth and one in the fifth, while only being able to score one of their own. Columbia fell 11-3 in game one of the doubleheader.
Kaitlyn Nottelmann gave up one hit, three runs, and two earned runs in 0.2 innings of work. Lexi Dickerson and Emerson Yakle both came in to relieve Nottelmann combining for five hits, eight runs, three earned runs, and two strikeouts in 3.2 innings of play. Offensively, Molly Carter was 2-3 with one run scored and one RBI, Dakota Newton went 1-3 with one run scored and two RBI's, and Rachel Sullivan was 2-3 with one run scored.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Cougars took a 1-0 lead after two innings. Neither team was able to score over the next three innings, however in the bottom of the sixth the Royals rallied for four runs to take a 4-1 lead. Columbia was unable to overcome the Royals in the final inning as they dropped to the Royals 4-1.
Natalie Dummitt went 2-2, Julianna Waldner was 2-3, while Karli Leeper was 1-3 with one run scored. Molly Carter was on the mound as she allowed four hits and four runs while striking out one batter in six innings on the mound.
The Cougars are back in action tomorrow, March 28th when they travel to Costa Mesa, California to take on the Vanguard University Lions in a doubleheader. The first game of the doubleheader is set to start at 4:00 p.m. with the second game to follow.
