Columbia, Mo. – This afternoon the Columbia College baseball team was back in action when they traveled to Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, to take on the William Baptist (Ark.) College Eagles in the third game of the three game series. The Cougars, who swept the doubleheader against the Eagles yesterday, were able to complete the three game sweep as they defeated Williams Baptist by a final score of 5-1 to improve to 16-4 on the season and 4-2 in conference play.
Columbia College was able to put together 11 hits this afternoon to complete the series sweep. They scored one run in the first, one run in the third, and three runs in the fifth to break out to 5-0 lead heading into the sixth. The Eagles did all they could to get back into the game and were able to bring a run across to score in the bottom of the eighth but that was as close as they would get as the Cougars picked up the final outs of the game to extend their winning streak to eight straight games.
Chris Wall (1-0) got the start in this one as he allowed five hits while striking out six batters in 5.0 scoreless innings of work. Derek Sallee (1-1) and Craig Smith (1-0) came in to relieve Wall as the two combined to allow just one hit and one earned run while striking out two batters in the final four innings of the game. Offensively, Columbia College was led by Andrew Warner who went 3-5 with a three run homerun. To go along with Warner, Alex Del Rio went 2-5 with two RBI's and Blade McKee went 2-4 with three runs scored to round out the top performers for Columbia.
The baseball team is back in action on Tuesday, March 13th when they play host to the William Woods (Mo.) University Owls in an AMC doubleheader. The first game of the doubleheader is set to start at 4 p.m. with the second to follow.
