Cougar Softball Drops Doubleheader to Lions

Henderson, Tenn. – The 15th ranked Columbia College softball team was back in action when they traveled to Henderson, Tennessee to take on the Freed-Hardeman University Lions in the AMC doubleheader Game of the Week.  The Cougars dropped the first game by a score of 8-7 and lost the second game in 10 innings by a final score of 3-2 to move to 23-12 on the season and 16-4 in conference play.

In the first game, the Cougars took a 1-0 lead after the first, however the Lions tied it up in the second. Heading into the fourth Columbia held a 4-2 lead. Each team went scoreless in the fourth, and then each grabbed two runs in the fifth to make it 6-4 Cougars. Columbia extended their lead with one more run in the sixth, but the Lions had a late surge in the bottom of the seventh and were able to score four runs to win game one by a score of 8-7.

Lexi Dickerson started for the Cougars as she allowed eight hits, four earned runs, and struck out two batters in four innings.  Reagen Radke and Kaitlyn Nottelmann came in to combine for five hits, four runs, and one strike out. Offensively, Rachel Sullivan went 2-5 with one run scored, Alexandra Linck and Natalie Dummitt each went 2-4 with one run scored and one RBI, Olivia Denslow went 2-5 with two runs scored and one RBI, and Libby Marko went 2-3 with one run scored and one RBI.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Cougars were looking to bounce back from game one. Neither team could get anything going on the offensive end as the game was scoreless throughout. As the game headed into extra innings, the eighth still remained scoreless. It was not until the ninth inning that each team was able to get on the board. The Cougars were able to score one run in the top of the ninth, but the Lions would come right back getting one of their own in the bottom of the inning causing the game to enter the 10th inning of play. In the 10th, Columbia was able to score another run to lead 2-1 midway through the inning. However, in the bottom of the 10th, the Cougars were unable to hold off the Lions as they scored two runs to take game two by a final score of 3-2.

Kaitlyn Nottelmann was in the circle as she allowed six hits and two earned runs, while striking out seven batters in her 9.1 innings of work. Offensively, Sullivan went 4-5, Allyson Metz went 1-2, Molly Carter and Olivia Denslow each went 1-4 with one RBI, and Julianna Waldner went 1-4 with one run scored, while Samantha Myers had one run scored as well.

The Cougars are back in action Sunday, April 22nd when they host the William Woods University Owls in an AMC doubleheader. Sunday will also serve as Senior Day for the Cougars. The first game of the doubleheader is set to start at 1:00 p.m. with the second game to follow.
