St. Louis, Mo. – This afternoon the Columbia College men's lacrosse team traveled to St. Louis, Missouri, to take on the seventh ranked Missouri Baptist University Spartans in a nonconference matchup. The Cougars fell to the Spartans by a final score of 9-4 to drop to 2-7 on the season.
Columbia College got off to a great start in this one as they were able to score the first goal of the contest just four minutes into the first period on a shot from J.T. Huez. However, their lead did not last long as the Spartans found the back of the net just a minute later to tie the score at one. Missouri Baptist added two more goals in the quarter and took a 3-1 lead into the second.
The Spartans continued to push the tempo in the second and were able to score two goals in the first five minutes of the period to take a 5-1 lead. The Cougars had a tough time getting anything going through most of the quarter but were able cut the Missouri Baptist lead to 5-2 following a second goal from J.T. Huez with five minutes to play in the half. The Spartans added one more goal with three minutes remaining in the period but a goal from Carson Morrissey with a minute left to play in the half made the score 6-3 heading into the halftime break. Columbia College was outshot 28-18 in the half.
The Cougars came out in the second half and were able to start the way they started the first as Kellen Brechbill found the back of the net three minutes into the third quarter to cut the Spartans lead to 6-4. Columbia College continued to push the tempo as the quarter progressed and created several scoring opportunities but were unable to find the back of the net as the score remained 6-4 heading into the fourth.
Missouri Baptist came out in the fourth quarter and were able to extend their lead to 7-4 less than a minute into the period. The Cougars did their best to get back into the game but two more goals late in the contest solidified the 9-4 victory for the Spartans.
Riley McDermott was in goal today as he made 16 saves in the contest.
The lacrosse team is back in action on Tuesday, April 10th when they travel to Leavenworth, Kansas, to take on the University of Saint Mary (Kan.) in a KCAC matchup. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
