Box Score Leavenworth, Kan. – This evening the Columbia College men's lacrosse team traveled to Leavenworth, Kansas to take on the University of Saint Mary Spires in a KCAC matchup. The Cougars overcame the Spires in overtime by a final score of 8-7 to move to 3-7 on the season.
The game was tight from the start as neither team could gain any separation through the first half. After the first quarter the game was tied two apiece. In the second, each team only gave up one goal apiece as they headed into halftime knotted at 3. In the first half, Columbia had goals from Cooper Heck, Sam Crum, and Carson Morrissey, while Jeremiah Lerch had two assists. The Cougars outshot the Spires 15-10 in the first half.
The second half was just like the first, each team going neck and neck. The Spires would outscore the Cougars by one in the third to hold a 6-5 lead heading into the final quarter. Columbia did not let the Spires get any separation in the fourth as the game was tied 7-7 with under two minutes to play. Neither team was able to grab a last second goal as regulation ended with a score of 7-7. In the second half, the Cougars had goals from Heck, Crum, and Lerch.
The Cougars were able to overcome the Spires in overtime with a game winning goal from Cooper Heck to secure an 8-7 victory for Columbia.
Riley McDermott was in goal tonight as he made 14 saves in the contest.
The lacrosse team is back in action on Thursday, April 12th when they host the Robert Morris University Eagles. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
