Fayette, Mo. – The Columbia College softball team was back in action this afternoon when they continued play in the 2018 NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round against the Central Methodist University Eagles in the championship game. The Cougars, who defeated CMU in their first game of the opening round, were able to beat the Eagles again by a final score of 9-0 to improve to 33-14 on the season and punch their ticket to the 38th Annual NAIA Softball World Series. The event is being held in Clermont, Florida May 25th-31st.
The Cougars bats were rolling early as they picked up two runs to start the game off. Columbia added one run in the second and rattled off four more in the top of the third, as they held the Eagles scoreless. The Cougars kept the Eagles off the board through the fourth and fifth innings. In the sixth, Columbia knocked in two more runs to extend their lead 9-0. While the Eagles did their best to get in the game, they could not overcome the Cougars, as Columbia claimed the championship title of the 2018 NAIA Softball National Championship Opening Round-Fayette Bracket.
Lexi Dickerson was on the mound as she allowed seven hits, zero runs, and struck out three batters in the win. Offensively, Rachel Sullivan went 3-4 with two RBI's, Dakota Newton went 1-3 with one run scored, Alexandra Linck was 1-2 with one run scored, Allyson Metz went 2-4 with two RBI's, Olivia Denslow was 1-4 with one run scored and one RBI, Natalie Dummitt went 2-3 with three runs scored, and Karli Leeper was 1-3 with one run scored and two RBI's.
The softball team is back in action when they travel to Clermont, Florida to compete in the 38th Annual NAIA Softball World Series May 25th-31st.
