Cougars Upset Two Time Defending Champions 6-4

Clermont, Fla. – The Columbia College softball team was back in action this afternoon when they continued play in Clermont, Florida for the 38th Annual NAIA Softball World Series. For the first time in the Cougars 17 trips to the tournament they have won their first two games. Today Columbia upset the two time defending National Champions, the Oklahoma City University Stars, giving the Stars their first loss in the World Series since 2015. The Cougars defeated the Stars by a final score of 6-4 to improve to 35-14 on the season.

The Cougars took the early 1-0 lead after the first inning. After a scoreless inning and a half, Columbia added another run to hold a 2-0 lead after three. The Cougars continued to keep the Stars off the board as the game progressed. In the bottom of the fifth, Columbia racked up four more runs to lead the Stars 6-0. Oklahoma City was finally able to get on the board in the top of the sixth. Heading into the final inning, Cougars led 6-1. The Stars were not done fighting as they rallied three runs to cut the lead to 6-4. With two outs and runners on base in the top of the seventh inning, a bomb to the wall, off the bat of Jaci Smith from OCU looked like it was going to tie the game, however Dakota Newton laid out making a top 10 highlight worthy catch to save the game and upset the two time defending National Champions with a 6-4 victory.

Lexi Dickerson got the win as she allowed seven hits, three earned runs, one unearned run, and struck out one batter in her 6.1 innings on the mound.
