Columbia, Mo. – Tonight the 10th ranked Columbia College women's soccer team kicked off their 2018 campaign when they played host to the 24th ranked John Brown (Ark.) University Golden Eagles in a nonconference matchup. The Cougars were defeated by the Golden Eagles by a final score of 1-0 and fell to 0-1 on the season.
Columbia College came out in the first half and had a tough time getting anything going early in the game. The Golden Eagles controlled the tempo to start and were able to put two shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of the half. The Cougars settled in as the period progressed but neither side was able to find the back of the net as the game remained scoreless at the halftime break. Columbia College had three shots in the half including two shots on target.
In the second half of the game, John Brown University got on the scoreboard quickly as it took them just over a minute to find the back of the net to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead. Following the goal, the Cougars picked up the tempo and were able to create several scoring chances but were unable to beat the John Brown keeper. They did their best to find a late equalizer but the Golden Eagles played tough defense down the stretch to hand the Cougars their first loss of the season.
Erin Jones made the start in goal for the Cougars picking up four saves in the contest.
The women's soccer team is back in action on Friday, August 31st when they play host to the University of Jamestown (N.D.) Jimmies in a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 5 p.m. on R. Marvin Owen's Field.
