Columbia, Mo. – The third ranked Columbia College volleyball team was back in action today when they took on the College of the Ozark Bobcats in a nonconference matchup being held at Stephens (Mo.) College. The Cougars swept the Bobcats (25-13, 25-16, 25-21). The Cougars improved to 10-1 on the season.
The Cougars took a quick 3-0 start to begin the match. The Bobcats were warming up as they tied the set at 4 early on. Over the next few plays the teams kept the score tight. After being tied at 8, Columbia used a little run to create some space 13-9. The Bobcats tried to close back in, but the Cougars continued to extend the lead as it was 20-11 late. Columbia sailed to victory in set one 25-13.
The Cougars were rolling after the first set, taking a 9-1 lead in the second. The Bobcats could not find a way to stop Columbia as they continued to execute, leading 19-9. The Bobcats tried to chip back in, but were too late as the Cougars grabbed set two 25-16 and took the lead 2-0.
Cougars remained in total control as they began set three 6-1 with a sweep in mind. Columbia was leading 16-5 before the Bobcats would make a push to try to stay alive. The Cougars still held some space as they led 17-11. Columbia was looking to lock in the sweep as the score was 24-16, but the Bobcats were not done yet as they went on a 5-0 run cutting the score 24-21. The Cougars were able to snag the final point and close out the match with a 3-0 sweep.
Columbia was led by Kiersten Anderson who had 11 kills, while Thais Andrade (15) and Manuela Vargas (10) each recorded double digit digs. In addition, Vargas also tallied 33 assists in the contest.
The volleyball team is back in action Friday, September 14th when they host the Williams Baptist (Ark.) College Eagles in an AMC conference matchup. The match is set to start at 7:00 p.m. in Southwell Complex.
