Women’s Soccer Clinches Programs 100th Win

Box Score

Columbia, Mo. – This afternoon the Columbia College women's soccer team was back in action when they traveled across town to Stephens (Mo.) College to take on the Stars in an AMC matchup. The Cougars, who came in at 21st in the latest 2018 NAIA Women's Soccer Top 25 Coaches' Poll that was released this afternoon, were able to defeat the Stars by a final score of 5-0 to improve to 5-3 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.

This was a milestone victory for the women's soccer team, and three-time AMC Women's Soccer Coach of the Year John Klein, as it marks the 100th win in program history. Since the program started competing in the 2012 season, the Cougars have accumulated a record of 100-30-6 (.757) and have won four outright AMC regular season championships as well as a share of a fifth. In addition, they have won four AMC Tournament Championships, have produced three AMC Player of the Year Award winners, two NAIA Third Team All-Americans, and six NAIA Honorable Mention All-Americans.

The Cougars dominated the game from the start holding the possession for most of the first half. It took them just six minutes to find their first goal of the game when Samantha Bassler headed in a cross from Molly Klein for her second goal of the season to give Columbia a 1-0 lead. Kelsey Mirts added a second tally for the Cougars just three minutes later when she finished off a cross from Bassler for her fifth goal of the season to give Columbia a 2-0 lead. Lucy Kingsley added two more goals in the half for her first and second of the season and the Cougars went into halftime with a 4-0 lead.

Columbia continued to control the possession in the second half and were able to score their fifth and final goal of the game with 37 minutes left to play. Molly Burke had the goal for the Cougars off of an assist from Lucy Kingsley for her first goal of the season. The Stars tried their best to get back into the game but the deficit was too large as the Cougars were able to close out the contest to clinch their 100th win in program history.

Kate Marshall and Katie Hudson split time in goal tonight for Columbia as the two combined for the teams fifth shutout of the season.

The women's soccer team is back in action on Saturday, September 22nd when they travel to Batesville, Arkansas, to take on the Lyon (Ark.) College Scots in an AMC matchup. The game is set to start at 11 a.m.
