St. Louis, Mo. – The second ranked Columbia College women's basketball team traveled to St. Louis, Missouri to take on the St. Louis College of Pharmacy Eutectics in an AMC contest. Columbia defeated the Eutectics 85-63. The Cougars now improve to 17-2 on the season and 11-2 in conference play.
The Cougars were connecting from beyond the arc as they were 4-7 from deep after five minutes of play with each three coming from a different Cougar. Columbia grabbed another bucket to lead 14-4 as the Eutectics called the first timeout. The Eutectics were sticking around as Columbia led 26-19 at the end of the first.
The Cougars came out in the second determined to turn it up a notch and they did just that as they went on a 9-2 run in the first four minutes. As the quarter continued, Columbia began to separate themselves holding a 45-30 lead with about two minutes before the half. However, in the final minutes of the half, the Eutectics found a spark and went on a run to cut the lead 48-37 at halftime. In the first half the Cougars shot 53 percent from the field, 50 from three, and 80 from the line. Ashlee Marlatt led all scorers with 16 points going 3-5 from beyond the arc, while Morgan Brandt pulled down eight rebounds in the half.
In the third, the Eutectics kept up the fight as they cut the lead to single digits, 52-45, causing the Cougars to take a timeout with just under six and a half minutes to go in the third. After the timeout, Columbia was able to take back a 10 point lead as the Eutectics took a quick timeout for themselves. The Eutectics were making the Cougars work for it on the offensive end, but Columbia maintained their lead 65-50 going into the final quarter. With about five minutes left in the game, the Cougars led by 20 points, 75-55. Although the Eutectics fought until the end, Columbia secured an 85-63 victory to wrap up their weekend.
Morgan Brandt had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, along with six assists, while Ashlee Marlatt dropped 16 points and five assists, Raegan Wieser had 12 points, and Jordan Alford had 11 points, three assists, and six rebounds. In addition, Alexis Uffmann had a season high seven points, along with five rebounds. Brandt's 17 points moved her into 10th place all-time in scoring with 1,201 points and her six assists put her in 9th place all-time with 218. Marlatt's 16 points moved her into 8th place all-time scoring with 1,243 points. Alford also had one steal to tie 16th all-time with 113 steals.
The women's basketball team travels to Hannibal, Missouri to face off with the Hannibal-LaGrange University Trojans in an AMC matchup on Tuesday, January 22nd. The game will tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
