Cougars Shoot Past Stars, Clinch Regular Season Title

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College women's soccer team took the field tonight as they hosted cross town foe the Stephen Stars in an AMC matchup. The Cougars defeated the Stars 8-0 and improve to 14-3 and 11-0 in conference play. With tonight's win, the Cougars have claimed the American Midwest Conference regular season title and will have home field advantage during the conference postseason. They have also clinched an automatic berth to the 2019 NAIA National Championship Opening Round.

The Cougars got the ball rolling early as Jewel Morelan found Reese Hamilton in the first 30 seconds of the game to get Columbia on the board. At the ninth minute mark, Kelsey Mirts added another goal and then assisted Lucy Kingsley at the 20th minute. Just five minutes after being subbed in, Chloe Hall kicked one in the back of the net at the 33rd minute to close out the first half.

Freshmen Natalie Zoellner made her mark in the second half scoring her first collegiate goal at the 70th minute mark. Not long after that, Mallory Holzer connected with Molly Klein as she netted one at the 72th minute and less than a minute later Isabella Govero added another one. Freshmen Brianna Heath finished the game up with one final goal in the 86th minute.

Kate Marshall started in goal for the Cougars and was relieved by Rileigh Huffman at the 80 minute mark. The two combined for a total of one save in the game.

The Columbia College women's soccer team will be back on the field when they host Williams Baptist (Ark.) University in their final regular season conference game on Saturday, November 2. The game will kick off at 12 p.m. at R. Marvin Owens Field. Saturday will also serve as senior day honoring Elisa Vega, Molly Klein, Emma Laney, Lucy Kingsley, Kelsey Mirts, and Kaitlyn Tambke.
