Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College women's soccer team took the field tonight in the American Midwest Conference Women's Soccer Championship Semifinals where they hosted the fourth seed Park (Mo.) University Pirates. The Cougars defeated the Pirates 3-0 to move onto the AMC Women's Soccer Championship Final and are now 17-3 on the season.
Kelsey Mirts sent one up high around the 18 meter mark to
Molly Klein who popped it right over the Pirate Keeper at the 30
th minute to give Columbia the lead. A corner kick from Klein made it to Abigayle Meyer who headed it into the back of the net two minutes before heading into the locker room for halftime to add to the Cougar lead. In the second half, in the 82
nd minute,
Brianna Heath crossed it to Klein who scored her seventh goal of the season and capped off the night for the top seeded Cougars.
Sophomore Kate Marshall was in goal to complete her 11th shutout of the season and recorded two saves.
In addition to tonight's victory, the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Women's Soccer Teams were announced. The 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District® Women's Soccer Teams, selected by CoSIDA, recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The Google Cloud Academic All-America® program separately recognizes soccer honorees in four divisions — NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA.
First-team Academic All-District® honorees advance to the Google Cloud Academic All-America® ballot. First-, second- and third-team (if necessary) Academic All-America® honorees will be announced in early December.
There were four members on the women's team who were selected for this honor including junior
Abigail Meyer, senior
Kaitlyn Tambke, senior
Kelsey Mirts, and senior
Molly Klein were all named First-team Academic All-District®. Klein majors in Business Administration with a 3.60 GPA, while Meyer, Tambke, and Mirts are all Nursing majors holding 3.95, 3.63, and 3.89 GPAs respectively.
The Cougars will host the AMC Women's Soccer Championship Final on Thursday, November 14
th when they play the third seed Missouri Baptist University at 3 p.m. on R. Marvin Owens Field.
