Cougar Volleyball Advances to Semifinals

Columbia, Mo. – The ninth ranked Columbia College volleyball team was back on the court tonight in the American Midwest Conference Women's Volleyball Championship Quarterfinals where they hosted the sixth seed Lyon (Ark.) College Scots. The Cougars defeated the Scots 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-19) to move to 27-4 on the season.

Prior to the match, the American Midwest Conference announced the Academic All-Conference awards for the 2019 season. The Cougars had two individuals recognized including senior Kiersten Anderson and sophomore Sidney Branson.

The Cougars had an impressive 0.565 hitting percentage in the first set tallying 16 kills. Columbia created a small cushion for themselves starting the second set 6-0 and stayed in control down the stretch as Anderson had back-to-back aces followed by back-to-back kills from Bailey Ulery. With the pressure of being down two sets, the Scots kept it close in the third set putting the ball down every opportunity they had. After being tied at 11 Columbia found their rhythm going on a 14-8 run to close out the set and match.

The Cougars were led by Jaqueline Silva and Anderson who had 12 and 10 kills, respectively, while Anderson also had four aces. Luisa Ferreira dished out 34 assists and Ellie Rockers led the way in digs coming up with eight.

The Cougars will be on the road for the remainder of the AMC Women's Volleyball Championship which will be held at Park University in Parkville, Missouri Friday, November 15 and Saturday, November 16. The Cougars will play the second seed Missouri Baptist University at 6:30 p.m. at Breckon Sports Center on Friday.
