Columbia, Mo. – The seventh ranked Columbia College volleyball team was back on the court as they hosted the fifth ranked Park (Mo.) University Pirates in their final regular season conference matchup. The Cougars fell to the Pirates 3-2 (24-26, 18-25, 25-23, 25-22, 14-16) to move to 26-4 on the season and 10-2 in conference play.
As expected, the first set was a battle up until the end. Two points was the biggest separation either team could gain as both teams kept it close up until the final points when the Pirates closed out the first set. In set two, Columbia started strong taking the first two points, but Park's 9-4 run late in the set gave them the two game advantage. Tensions rose in the third set as both teams fought for every last point until the Cougars went on a 4-2 run to get away from the Pirates after being tied at 21. Once again, set four was close up until the very end when
Kiersten Anderson and
Adianez Rivera took turns putting the ball down to get Columbia back on track to tie the match and force a fifth set. The Cougars kept the Pirates on their toes as they stopped them right at game point with back-to-back kills from
Sidney Branson and Anderson followed by a service ace from
Luisa Ferreira, but despite their efforts the Pirates came out on top to win the match.
Anderson led the way with a season high of 25 kills while Branson also had a season high with 19 kills and Rivera added 16 kills. In addition, Ferreira dished out 57 assists and picked up 20 digs while
Ellie Rockers tallied 17 digs and
Jaqueline Silva added 13 digs.
The Cougars will be back on the court on Tuesday, November 12 when they host the American Midwest Conference Tournament Quarterfinal in Southwell Complex at 7 p.m. Their opponent will be determined this Saturday once the regular season has been completed by all AMC teams.
