Cougars Advance to AMC Tournament Semifinals

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College women's soccer team took the field tonight in the American Midwest Conference Tournament Quarterfinal where they hosted the eighth seed Stephens (Mo.) College Stars to begin post season. The Cougars defeated the Stars 11-0 to move onto the AMC Tournament Semifinals and are now 16-3 on the season.

Prior to the start of the game, the American Midwest Conference announced the AMC Academic All-Conference awards for the 2019 season. The Cougars had 13 individuals recognized including Abigail Meyer, Allison Floyd, Chloe Hall, Ellie Hilton, Emma Laney, Kaitlyn Tambke, Kate Marshall, Kelsey Mirts, Lucy Kingsley, Maddie Ballard, Mallory Holzer, Megan Floyd, and Molly Klein.

The Stars had a strong defensive line as they kept the Cougars away from their goal until the 17th minute when Abigail Meyer found leading Cougar scorer Kelsey Mirts who headed one right into the back of the net. At the 22 minute mark, Molly Klein placed the corner kick perfectly to Meyer who headed it to the bottom left corner of the net. Only 20 seconds after that, Lucy Kingsley connected with Morelan to make it a 3-0 game, and at the 24th minute Morelan made her way up the field and broke away from the Stars goalie to add another goal. Isabella Govero was taken down in the box which gave Mallory Hozler the penalty kick opportunity that landed in the bottom right hand corner.

Two minutes into the second half, Chloe Hall found Govero who scored her ninth goal of the season. Govero switched it up at the 58th minute when she assisted Reese Hamilton who also scored her ninth goal of the season. A hand ball inside the box gave Columbia the penalty kick opportunity which Brianna Heath took to score at the 60 minute mark. Holzer crossed it to Govero who slid into the ball ten meters from the net to score the Cougars 10th goal of the night followed by Hall's second goal of the game at the 82nd minute.

Kate Marshall and Rileigh Huffman each spent some time in goal during the shut out.

The Cougars will host the AMC Tournament Semifinal on Monday, November 11th when they play the No. 5 seed Park (Mo.) University Pirates at 3 p.m. on R. Marvin Owens Field.
