Irvine, Calif. – The No. 2 Columbia College men's soccer team was back on the field today competing in the 2019 NAIA National Championships in Irvine, California. The Cougars defeated the Wildcats from Baker (Kan.) University 2-1 in a double overtime thriller. The Cougars continue their undefeated season with a 22-0 record.
The Wildcats were quick to get on the board when a pass two yards from the goal made it into the back of the Cougar net in the 12
th minute. A loose ball at the 39 minute mark found its way to
Caden Castello who tipped it right over the Baker goalkeeper for his first goal of the season.
With the season on the line, both teams put on their best defense and did not allow a goal through the remainder of regulation and through the first overtime period. At the 102 minute mark,
Matheus Albuquerque would find the goal with a kick ten yards out to win the game and send the Cougars to the quarterfinals. This was the second time this season the Cougars were victorious in double overtime.
Baker outshot Columbia 21-8 however Columbia led 12-0 in saves with the fantastic play of
Ryan Harrisskitt in goal.
The Cougars will be back on the field on Wednesday, December 4 when they continue play in the 2019 NAIA National Championships Quarterfinals. Columbia will play against Oklahoma Wesleyan University at 6 p.m. CST.
