Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

And Then There Were Four!

Irvine, Calif. – The No. 2 Columbia College men's soccer team was back on the field today creating more magic in the 2019 NAIA National Championships in Irvine, California. The Cougars defeated the Eagles from Oklahoma Wesleyan University 2-1 in the national quarterfinals, making this their deepest run in the championships. The Cougars continue their undefeated season with a 23-0 record.

The Cougars and the Eagles were knocking elbows all game long keeping each other on their toes in an intense matchup. It was in the 38th minute where the Eagles made a high pass that dropped right at the feet of the Oklahoma Wesleyan scoring leader who went one-on-one with Cougar keeper Ryan Harrisskitt who could not execute the save before heading into halftime.

The Cougars came alive in the second half when Juan Pablo Agredo pushed his way past the Oklahoma Wesleyan goalkeeper where Joey Spotanski found the loose ball and poked it in the back of the net to tie the game in the 69th minute. Just ten minutes later, Spotanski found himself against two Eagle defenders when he found Ximo Gil on his left who scored the game winning goal to send the Cougars onto the national semifinals.

Ryan Harrisskitt recorded the win in goal for the Cougars.

"It was just a fun college soccer game. That's such a great soccer team over there, Oklahoma Wesleyan.  We looked so poor yesterday, but we found a way. Today, I thought we were significantly better.  We were more organized, we were committed. We went down a goal, we've gone down a goal 4-5 times this year and hung in there. I thought the first group - we didn't make any subs until about 60-70 minutes into the game. I thought the next group of four, they came in and were spectacular. Ximo Gil with the winning goal, he was excellent up top. Spotanski was excellent up top. Overall, I thought just unbelievable team effort," said Cougar Head Coach John Klein.

The Cougars will be back on the field on Friday, December 6 when they continue play in the 2019 NAIA National Championships Semifinals. Columbia will play against the winner of William Carey (Miss) University and Hastings (Neb.) College. Game time is slated for 8:30 p.m. CST.
