Fulton, Mo. – This afternoon the Columbia College men's baseball team was back in action as they played the William Woods Owls in an AMC doubleheader. Columbia won the first game 3-1 in extra innings, but dropped game two 2-0. The Cougars are now 16-11 on the season and 11-7 in conference play.
In the first game, it was an even matchup between the Cougars and the Owls up until the top of the sixth. Columbia was first to get on the board, but William Woods responded with their own run to make the game tied at one. Neither team was able to score by the end of the seventh, so the first game went to extra innings. In the top of the eleventh,
Dalton Bealmer hit a two-run homerun to take the lead 3-1. The Owls made one last attempt to keep the game going, but the Cougars got the last three outs of the game to solidify the win.
Chris Wall (3-3) was the sole pitcher for the Cougars as he allowed just one earned run and struck out seven batters in eleven innings of work. Offensively, the Cougars were led by
Dalton Bealmer who had a hit while scoring a run and two RBI, and
Kenny Piper who had two hits and one RBI.
In game two, the Owls scored the only two runs of the game in the third inning. The Cougars battled to get themselves back in the game, but fell short.
Jacob Ford (2-4) got the start on the mound for the Cougars and was relieved by
Conner Darnell (3-0) in the fifth to strike out a combined seven batters in seven innings of play. Offensively, the Cougars were led by
Chase Urhahn and
Kenny Piper as they had a hit apiece.
The baseball team is back in action tomorrow as they continue the AMC series against the William Woods Owls. First pitch is set to start at 6 p.m.
