Columbia Softball Splits with Mustangs

Conway, Ark. – The Columbia College softball team traveled to Conway, Arkansas to take on the Central Baptist College Mustangs in the AMC Game of the Week. This doubleheader was a rematch of the 2018 AMC Championship Series. The Cougars fell in game one 6-4 and held on to win game two 6-5. Columbia is now 28-10 on the season and 19-3 in conference play.

In game one the Cougars got on the board in the first with one run, but the Mustangs were able to take a 2-1 lead after the inning. In the top of the third, Columbia was able to bring in two runs, including a solo homer from Karolina Arbova to regain the lead 3-2. They upped their lead to two with another run in the fourth. However, in the bottom of the sixth the Mustangs went on a run, scoring four runs to lead 6-4. The Cougars were unable to bounce back in the top of the seventh and fell 6-4.

Lexi Dickerson was in the circle as she allowed 10 hits, six earned runs, and struck out four batters in seven innings. Offensively, Olivia Denslow went 2-4  with one run scored and one RBI, Libby Marko was 1-2 with one run scored, Molly Carter was 1-3 with two RBIs, Natalie Dummitt and Allison Keen each went 1-3, and Karolina Arbova was 1-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Samantha Myers also added a run.

In game two the Cougars jumped to the early lead grabbing two runs in the first and one a piece in the second and third, while keeping the Mustangs scoreless. In the fifth Columbia snagged another run to lead 4-0. In the bottom of the sixth the Mustangs came alive and tallied three runs, cutting the lead to 4-3, with one inning to play. In the final inning the Cougars were able to get one more run as Molly Carter homered, giving them a two run lead. However, the Mustangs were not going away without a fight. They were rallying back as they again cut the score to just one run, 6-5. The Cougars stood their ground and were able to secure the win 6-5.

Molly Carter started the game as she allowed eight hits, three earned runs, and struck out two batters in 6.2 innings of work. Kaitlyn Nottelmann came in just one out away from victory and took care of business as she quickly struck out the batter to lock up the win. Offensively, Olivia Denslow went 1-3, Molly Carter went 2-3 with three runs scored and one RBI, Mackenzie Kasarda went 1-2 with one run scored, Natalie Dummitt went 3-4 with four RBIs, Jacey Meyer was 2-4, and Allison Keen was 1-3. Reagen Radke and Elizabeth Schimpf each added a run.

The Cougars are back in action on tomorrow, Saturday April 20th when they go to Batesville, Arkansas to face the Lyon College Scots in their final AMC doubleheader of the regular season. Game one will begin at 1 p.m. with game two following.
