Columbia, Mo. – Any time the top two nationally ranked teams meet for a conference title, you can expect a match of titanic proportions. Saturday's North Finals between No. 1 ranked Columbia College and No. 2 Maryville University kept spectators captivated in a marathon 5-game series finale for almost five hours. The series was back and forth, but in the end Maryville scarcely defeated the Cougars 3-2.
Maryville put high priority on the champions Sejuani, Ezreal and Pyke. Each champion was picked in four out of the five games. The champions excel in scaling to late game and are relatively safe picks because of the mobility built into their kits. In game four, the Cougars found a winning counter to Maryville's strategy with Elise, Cassiopeia and Alistar. Game five lasted nearly 60 minutes and accumulated a staggering 218.6k gold total.
The Cougars' loss makes the road to the 2019 College League of Legends Championship a bit longer. Similar to last year, they will need to compete in the Championship Play-In gauntlet, April 1-28, for a chance at the remaining four spots.
This Saturday, April 6th, the Cougars may have another chance to extract revenge against the Saints at this year's iBuyPower Midwest Campus Clash & Gaming Expo at Columbia College's Southwell Complex. Don't forget the event is totally free and opens at 10 a.m. The event will also be live-streamed from our Twitch.tv channel CC_Esports.
