St. Louis, Mo. – This evening, the Columbia College men's baseball team was back in action as they played a doubleheader against the Harris-Stowe State University Hornets to finish the AMC three game series. The Cougars took game one against the Hornets as they won 12-11 in extra innings. Game two was suspended due to light. The game will resume on a later date and will begin where it left off with the Cougars leading 15-4. The Cougars are now 18-12 on the season and 13-8 in conference play.
The Hornets were first to get on the board today as they scored a run in the first, and added two more in the second to take the lead 3-0.
Nolan Rattai hit a two-run homerun in the third to get the Cougars back in the game, but the Hornets responded by adding two more runs in the same inning. Columbia scored again in the fourth and went on to add four more runs in the fifth, including a three-run homerun by
Kenny Piper to give the Cougars their first lead of the game. Columbia continued with their momentum as they added two runs in the sixth to make it a 9-5 game. Harris-Stowe tallied up three runs in the sixth, and added another in the seventh to tie the game at nine.
Jady Reese hit a homerun in the tenth and
Chase Urhahn hit a two-run homerun to give the Cougars the 12-9 lead. Harris-Stowe responded with two runs in the same inning, but Columbia got the last three outs to win the game 12-11.
Jacob Ford (2-4) got the start on the mound for the Cougars as he struck out five batters in three innings of play.
Derek Sallee (0-1),
Conner Darnell (3-1), and
Ethan Howser relieved Ford as they struck out a combined two batters in 4.0 innings of work.
Josiah Imhoff (3-0) and
Jordan Copeland (1-0) also pitched for the Cougars as they only allowed a combined two earned runs and struck out five batters in three innings. Offensively, the Cougars were led by
Kenny Piper who had two hits while scoring a run and had five RBI,
Nolan Rattai who went three for five while scoring four runs and had two RBI, and
Chase Urhahn who had two hits while scoring three runs and had two RBI to round out the top performers for the Cougars.
The baseball team is back in Monday, April 8
th as they travel to Hannibal, Missouri to play a doubleheader against the Hannibal-LaGrange Trojans to finish the AMC series. First pitch is set to begin at 1 p.m.
