Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College softball team took the field today in the AMC Game of the Week as they hosted the Freed-Hardeman University Lions in a doubleheader. The Cougars won game one 3-1 and fell 2-1 in game two. Columbia is now 21-9 on the season and 12-2 in conference play.
In game one the teams were in a stalemate all the way through four innings. Neither side letting anyone get anything easily. Finally in the fifth inning, the Cougars loaded the bases and Molly Carter stepped up to the plate and doubled to drive in two runs to break open the scoreboard with a 2-0 lead. The Cougars added another run in the inning to go up 3-0. In the top of the seventh the Lions were able to score one run, but Columbia held their ground and secured the final outs to win game one 3-1.
Lexi Dickerson commanded the mound as she allowed four hits and struck out six batters. Offensively, Olivia Denslow was 1-4 with one run scored, Libby Marko, Natalie Dummitt, Allison Keen, and Avgustina Arbova were all 1-3, Molly Carter was 2-3 with two RBIs, Jacey Meyer was 1-2, Karolina Arbova was 2-3 with one RBI, and Samantha Myers and Elizabeth Schimpf each added a run.
In game two the Cougars got on the board right away in the first to lead 1-0. However, the game would remain scoreless all the way until the top of the sixth when the Lions hit a two-run homerun to take their first lead of the day 2-1. In the bottom of the seventh the Cougars had one last chance to come back, but were unable to overcome the Lions as they fell 2-1.
Kaitlyn Nottelmann was on the mound in game two as she allowed four hits, two earned runs, and struck out three batters in seven innings. Offensively, Olivia Denslow was 2-4 with one run scored, Mackenzie Kasarda was 3-3, and Karolina Arbova was 1-3.
The Cougars are back in action on Tuesday, April 9th when they travel to Fulton, Missouri to face the William Woods University Owls in an AMC doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
