Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College women's soccer team hosted the Ottawa University Braves in a nonconference matchup today with the Cougars coming out victorious. Columbia won the contest 6-1 and improves to 2-1 on the season.
The Cougars held control of the ball for a majority of play throughout the first half, pressing and keeping control in the Ottawa end. Columbia pushed hard toward the Braves goal and finally broke through when
Jewel Morelan passed the ball to
Kelsey Mirts who got Columbia their first goal of the game. The Cougars continued their high intensity and attack toward the goal.
Emma Laney created the next scoring opportunity for the Cougars as she darted towards the net and passed it off to Mirts for the second goal in the 23
rd minute. Mirts continuing her momentum, scoring her third goal of the game just two minutes later. In the 32
nd minute, there was a commotion by Ottawa's goal and Mirts was able to put a foot on the ball and find the goal once again.
Ottawa's lone goal of the contest game just before the halftime break. Ottawa capitalized on a free kick as Serna Douma took a pass from the Brave's Reighna Werner into the net.
Columbia stayed aggressive in the second half of play as
Megan Floyd battled the defender and made the pass to
Isabella Govero in front of the net to give the Cougars a 5-1 advantage. The Cougars did not let down from there, applying continuous pressure to Ottawa's defense. Mirts found the back on the net one final time in the 72
nd minute of play, setting the school record for most goals in a single game. The Cougars held a strong defense for the remainder of the second half, grabbing the win 6-1.

Kate Marshall split time in net for Columbia, recording three saves.
The women's soccer team is back in action on Wednesday, September 4
th when they travel to Grand View (Iowa) University in another nonconference matchup. The game is set to kick off at 7:30 p.m.
