Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College men's soccer team was back in action tonight when they hosted 5
th ranked Oklahoma Wesleyan University. The 11
th ranked Cougars defeated the Eagles by a final score of 3-1 and are now 6-0 on the season.
Columbia came prepared to play tonight and ready for redemption after falling to the Eagles 7-0 last season. The Cougars had complete control of the first half coming up with their first goal at the five minute mark as the Oklahoma Wesleyan defender turned the ball over and
Mako Makoanyane buried one right into the back of the net. At the 10 minute mark, the Eagles goalkeeper stepped out of the net attempting to get a hand on the ball as
Ximo Gill popped the ball up perfectly to
Nick Brandt for his fourth goal of the season. A foul on Columbia late in the half gave the Eagles their best opportunity to cut the score in half, but
Ryan Harrisskitt made the diving save to keep Oklahoma Wesleyan off the board.
Oklahoma Wesleyan showed some spark in the second half as they fought their way into the Columbia box to cut the Cougars lead in half at the 53 minute mark. Sophomore Joe Spotanski made his mark tonight as he was able to sneak one in right under the Eagles goalkeeper for his first goal on the season and to give Columbia their two-goal lead back with 25 minutes left to play. The Cougar defense finished strong as the Eagles only logged six shots on goal in the game and were handed their second loss of the season.
Ryan Harrisskitt was in goal for Columbia, posting five saves on the night.
The men's soccer team is back in action on Saturday, September 21
st when they host Lyon College to open up American Midwest Conference play. The game is set to kick off at 2:30 p.m. on R. Marvin Owens Field.
