Batesville, Ark. - The Columbia College volleyball team, ranked No. 14 in the most recent NAIA poll, kicked off their two game road-trip weekend with a sweep over the Lyon College Scots. With the win, the Cougars improve to 21-9 overall and 7-0 in the American Midwest Conference. The Cougars rolled to a 25-19, 25-10, 25-17.
The Cougars took an early lead in the first set at 9-7. Errors from the Scots followed by a big serving run from
Raven Buckley extended the Columbia lead to 20-12.
Abby Massengill and
Sude Gundogan each had kills to put the Cougars at set point, 24-18, before a kill from
Allana Capella gave the Cougars the first set win, 25-19.
Camila Espejo served the Cougars to a 4-0 lead in the second set before a service error ended her run. A kill from
Ellie Rockers put
Raven Buckley behind the service line. Buckley served nine straight points for a 13-1 Columbia lead. The Cougars hit a blistering .562% with 19 team kills and only one error to take the second set, 25-10.
The third set saw both teams trade points until Columbia took a narrow 14-11 lead. The Scots' offense started to come alive as they powered Lyon back to tie the set at 15-15 before an attacking error stopped their momentum. More errors from Lyon continued to push Columbia towards victory as they took a 20-17 lead. The Cougars claimed the final five points of the match as
Luisa Ferreira had two kills and a service ace while
Beyza Bektasoglu and
Abby Massengill each had a kill to end the match.Â
Allana Capella led the offensive effort as she hit .500% with 13 kills to go along with seven digs.
Ellie Rockers followed with nine kills and 11 digs.
Abby Massengill contributed eight kills, while
Sude Gundogan and
Danielle Prior were error free with seven and six kills each, respectively.
Luisa Ferreira dished out 43 assists. On defense,
Magdalena Bostal had a team-high 19 digs while
Olivia Skipworth added 12 of her own.Â
