Cougars Extend Home Winning Streak to 33 Games

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College women's basketball team had five players score in double figures as the Cougars won their 33rd-straight home game with a 77-62 victory over Central Methodist University Wednesday at the Arena of Southwell Complex.
 
Mallory Shetley (14 points), Mya Miller (12), Abby Backes (10), Ashtyn Klusmeyer (10) and Lexi Miller (10) all scored in double figures for Columbia, which shot a season-high 49.2 percent (32-65) from the field in the win. The Cougars dominated the glass outrebounding the Eagles 45-27, and had a 25-5 advantage in bench points.
 
Columbia improved to 3-0 with the win, while Central Methodist fell to 2-1.
 
DeLaney Horstman scored six of the first 12 points as the Cougars jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the opening 3:39. A jumper by Backes capped a 10-0 run as Columbia hit 6-of-8 from the field to open the contest.
 
Central Methodist scored the final six points of the quarter to trim the lead to two (20-18). Horstman (8) and Shetley (6) combined for 14 of 20 points for the Cougars.
 
The Eagles got the lead down to one (23-22) with 8:24 left before half, but the Cougars answered with a 16-4 run to get the lead to double digits (39-26).
 
Columbia took a 40-32 lead to half after shooting 54.8 percent (17-31) from the field and held a 20-13 rebounding advantage. Backes led the Cougars with 10 first-half points, including six in the second quarter.
 
Central Methodist once again cut the lead down to one (43-42) with 6:35 left in the third, but Columbia answered back with four points to make it 47-42. A 13-1 run by the Cougars extended the advantage to 62-47, highlighted by a three-pointer by Lexi Miller.
 
Shetley had eight points and Mya Miller added seven in the third quarter for Columbia, which led 63-50. The Cougars hit 9-of-18 from the field in the frame.
 
Kayhla Adams led Central Methodist with 23 points, while Sa'Mya Stevens added 20 and Tristan Porter chipped in with 10.
 
The Cougars have nine days off before returning to action for an exhibition game on Saturday, November 16 at NCAA Division I Colorado State University. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. (MT) in Fort Collins, Colo.
 
NOTES: Columbia lead the all-time series with Central Methodist 7-1 ... Tori Rubel led Columbia with a career-high 10 rebounds.
