Defense Stands Tall in Win at Missouri Baptist

St. Louis, Mo. – The Columbia College women's basketball team limited host Missouri Baptist University to 35.2 percent shooting from the field in a 78-59 win Saturday in St. Louis. 
 
The Cougars dominated the paint outrebounding the Spartans 39-29 and had a 30-16 advantage in points in the paint. Columbia also hit 17-of-19 from the free-throw line.
 
Columbia remained undefeated at 16-0 (10-0 AMC), while Missouri Baptist suffered its second-consecutive loss and is 4-13 (4-7 AMC).
 
Lexi Miller led the Cougars with 19 points on five three-pointers, while Mya Miller (17 points, seven rebounds), Mallory Shetley (14 points, seven assists), Abby Backes (10 points, four assists) and Lauren Friedrich (10 points, five rebounds) all scored in double figures.
 
Lexi Miller scored on a lay-up and canned a three to highlight an 11-2 run by the Cougars as they led 15-7. Columbia built a double-double lead (21-11) after one quarter behind eight points from Lexi Miller and five from Mya Miller.
 
Columbia did not allow a field goal for a span of 9:30 from the end of the first quarter to near the end of the second as the Cougars extended their lead to 31-12.
 
The Cougars limited Missouri Baptist to 20.8 percent (5-24) shooting in the first half and took a commanding 33-17 lead at the break. Lexi Miller led Columbia with 11 points.
 
The lead grew to 20 (46-26) on a bucket by Shetley, and then eight points by Friedrich in the final 3:30 of the quarter pushed the Columbia lead to 57-35 after three quarters. The Cougar hit 7-of-12 from the field in the quarter, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.
 
Sophia Horton (21 points) and Mariana Cubero (10 points, eight rebounds) scored in double figures for Missouri Baptist, which shot 46.7 percent (14-30) from the field in the second half.
 
The Cougars host University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy on Monday, January 20 at 3 p.m.
 
NOTES: Columbia won its seventh-straight game against Missouri Baptist and leads the all-time series 47-2 ... Shetley moved into second place in program history in scoring (1,873) and sixth in assists (354).
