Cougars Stay Perfect in AMC Play With Win Over Stars

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College women's basketball team dominated on the glass and at the free-throw line, pulling away for a 64-53 victory over Stephens College on Wednesday night at the Arena of Southwell Complex.

The Cougars outrebounded Stephens 48-25 and converted 25-of-29 free throws in the victory.

Mya Miller led the way with 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the field, adding nine rebounds and three blocks. Ashtyn Klusmeyer and Lexi Miller each scored 16 and 15 points respectively, while Lexi Rubel posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds to go along with three assists.

Columbia won its sixth-straight game to improve to 17-1 and 8-0 in the American Midwest Conference, while Stephens fell to 6-12 and 5-3 in the AMC.

The Cougars jumped out to an early lead and never trailed, holding Stephens to just 11 first-quarter points. Mya Miller scored nine points in the opening period, including a three-point play, as Columbia built a 22-11 advantage. Miller's efficient shooting sparked the Cougars' fast start.

Columbia led 36-26 at halftime despite 23 turnovers in the game, as the Cougars' dominance on the boards and at the free-throw line offset their ball-handling struggles.

The Cougars managed just eight points in the third quarter but maintained their lead at 44-39 heading into the final period.

Klusmeyer and Miller combined to score eight of the Cougars' first 11 points in the fourth quarter as Columbia pushed the lead to 49-39. The Cougars put the game away from the free-throw line down the stretch, converting 14-of-18 attempts in the final period.

Quimari Shelton led Stephens with 21 points and five rebounds, while LaiJanique Perry-Ellis (14 points) and Simone Clay (12) also scored in double figures for the Stars.

Columbia matched Stephens with 32 points in the paint while converting 18 points off turnovers compared to just eight for the visitors.

NOTES: Columbia leads the all-time series against Stephens 34-3.
