Cougars Claim Outright AMC Championship

Columbia, Mo. – The Columbia College women's basketball team claimed an outright American Midwest Conference Championship with a 70-55 win at Stephens College on Thursday in Columbia, Mo.
 
The outright championship is the ninth in program history and 14th overall for Columbia.
 
Leading 50-48 with 2:06 left in the third quarter, the Cougars held Stephens to 10-straight misses and opened the fourth quarter on a 13-1 run to put the game out of reach.
 
Columbia won its 15th-straight game to improve to 26-1 and 17-0 in the American Midwest Conference (AMC), while Stephens had its three-game win streak snapped and dropped to 12-14 overall and 11-5 in the AMC.
 
Mya Miller (17 points), Ashtyn Klusmeyer (15 points, seven rebounds), Lexi Rubel (14 points, six rebounds, six assists) and Lexi Miller (13 points, six rebounds) scored in double figures for Columbia, which shot 45.5 percent from the field (25-55) and had a dominating 48-22 rebounding advantage in the win.
 
Columbia came out strong, scoring the first seven points of the game while forcing four early misses to take a 7-0 lead in the opening three minutes. The Cougars pushed the advantage to double digits with an 8-2 run and led 19-9 at the end of the quarter. Columbia's defense held Stephens to 4-of-15 shooting (26.7 percent).
 
The lead stretched to 29-17 with 4:12 remaining in the half, but back-to-back three-pointers by Sydney Reddin sparked an 8-0 run as Stephens cut the Columbia advantage to 29-23.
 
Columbia carried a 31-25 lead into half, fueled by 10 points from Lexi Miller and nine from Klusmeyer. The Cougars shot 10-of-26 (38.5 percent) from the field and committed eight turnovers in the first half, but converted 9-of-10 attempts at the free-throw line.
 
LaiJanique Perry-Ellis poured in 11 straight points to pull the Stars within three, and a bucket by Destinne Hunt cut the lead to 47-46, prompting a Columbia timeout. Lauren Freidrich answered with a wing three-pointer with 21 seconds remaining to push the lead to 53-48 at the end of the third quarter.
 
Lexi Miller opened the fourth quarter with a three-pointer to stretch the advantage to 56-48, and a layup by Klusmeyer restored a double-digit lead at 58-48 with 8:20 to play.
 
Perry-Ellis (25 points) and Reddin (11) scored in double figures for Stephens, which had a 34-26 advantage in points in the paint but hit just 5-of-19 from three-point range.
 
The Cougars close out regular season play at UHSP on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 2 p.m.
