SHAWNEE, Kan. — The Columbia College softball team earned a split on Friday at the Top Gun Midwest College Classic, defeating Kansas Wesleyan University 8-2 and falling to Clarke University 5-4.
The Cougars will play two more games tomorrow against Oklahoma Wesleyan and (RV) Benedictine College.
Game One: CC def. Kansas Wesleyan, 8-2
- Ella Schouten (W, 3-2): 7.0 IP, 10 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 10 SO
- Taryn Hagardt went 3-for-4 to lead the offense
- Cassidy Avery drove in two runs with a single in the bottom of the first inning
- Tasia Green followed with a two-run double to cap a four-run first inning and put the game away early
- Columbia added four unearned runs in the sixth inning off a pair of Wesleyan errors to seal the victory
- Abigail Zismer scored twice and drew two walks out of the leadoff spot
Game Two: Clarke (Iowa) def. CC, 5-4
- Micaiah Cordell (L, 2-2): 3.2 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 SO
- Kennedy Jensen: 3.1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 SO
- Abigail Zismer went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to pace the offense
- Wriley Taylor and Cassidy Avery each tallied three hits; Taylor drove in a run in the first inning
- Columbia took a 3-2 lead in the third inning on an RBI groundout by Kennedy Schanuth and a two-run triple by Cassidy Avery
