COLUMBIA, Mo. - The (RV) Columbia College men's lacrosse team suffered their first loss in Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) play this afternoon against Benedictine College (Kan.). The Cougars fell 22–8 to the undefeated Ravens. Columbia falls to 5-4 overall and 2-1 in conference.Â
Columbia opened the game on level footing with a Drake Morrissey goal knotted it at 1–1 early in the first. But, Benedictine outscored the Cougars 4–1 in the closing minutes of the period to take a two-goal lead into the second. The third quarter proved decisive, the Ravens poured in nine goals while holding the Cougars to just two.Â
Drake Morrissey led the offense with a hat trick and an assist, while Nico Andrews added two goals and two assists, including a highlight-reel man-down goal in the final minute. Kai Garriock also contributed two goals, both assisted by Jack McDowell.
The Cougars struggled to control possession at the face-off dot, winning just 15 of 33 draws (45%) against a dominant Benedictine unit. Benedictine's possession advantage led directly to their shot volume and scoring runs.
The Cougars went 0-for-2 on the man advantage, failing to capitalize on either opportunity while Benedictine converted 3 of 5 extra-man chances. Bryce Peltier made 13 saves in 60 minutes for Columbia.
The Cougars will look to bounce back as they hit the road Wednesday, April 1 to face the Spartans of Missouri Baptist University at 7:00 p.m.Â
