Shoulta's Clutch Bat Powers Cougars to Series Sweep Over Trojans

COLUMBIA, MOHunter Shoulta delivered all the offense Columbia College needed, driving in all three runs on a pair of clutch singles as the Cougars claimed a 3-1 victory over Hannibal-LaGrange University on Monday afternoon to complete the American Midwest Conference series sweep. Columbia improves to 21-9-1 overall and 12-2-1 in conference play.

Kam Dohogne set the tone from the jump, working into the sixth inning and limiting the Trojans to five hits and one unearned run while striking out three. Eric Fields came on in relief and was sharp, tossing 2.1 innings without allowing a run to earn his sixth win of the season. Hunter Hees closed things out, recording the final two outs and picking up his second save.

Columbia struck first in the bottom of the first. Dylan Carlton reached on a hit-by-pitch and Joe Hoerchler drew a walk to put two on for Shoulta, who lined a single to left field to score Carlton and give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage.

Hannibal-LaGrange knotted things up in the fourth when Dylan Garcia worked a walk, moved to third on a Dillyn Ledezma single through the right side, and came home on a Cougar error. The Trojans had threatened in both the second and third innings with runners in scoring position, but Dohogne stranded them each time.

The Cougars put the game away in the seventh. Zac Fruend led off with a double to left-center, and after Carlton struck out and Tyler Renn was intentionally walked, Hoerchler drew a bases-loaded walk to load the bags for Shoulta. He delivered again, ripping a single to right-center that scored Alex Hagan — who had pinch run for Renn — and Fruend to make it 3-1.

Fields and Hees made those runs stand up the rest of the way, with the two combining to retire the final eight Trojan batters they faced.
