Fruend, Marcinkiewicz Fuel Cougars' 13-2 Blowout of Bobcats

POINT LOOKOUT, MOZac Fruend and Joey Marcinkiewicz combined for seven RBI and a pair of home runs as Columbia College erupted for 13 runs in a dominant 13-2 non-conference victory over the College of the Ozarks on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Smith Field. The Cougars improve to 22-9-1 overall and 12-2-1 in American Midwest Conference play.

Jackson Forck was the story on the mound, coming on in relief and delivering three scoreless innings to earn the win and improve to 2-2 on the season. Forck allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out one across his three frames. Hayden Wilson closed things out with a clean two innings, fanning three of the seven batters he faced. Noah Gadberry got the start and tossed a perfect first inning before a committee of arms bridged the gap to Forck.

Columbia wasted no time getting on the board in the second. Hunter Shoulta singled and Joey Marcinkiewicz was hit by a pitch to set the table, and Jack Dunn delivered with an RBI single to left to make it 1-0. A fielder's choice by Jack Hotze plated another run, and an error on a Dylan Carlton at-bat allowed two more to score — giving the Cougars a 4-0 cushion before the Bobcats came to bat. College of the Ozarks answered with a run of their own in the bottom half when Craig Busse came around to score on a catcher's error, and the Bobcats added another unearned run in the fourth on a George Reynolds RBI single to pull within 4-2.

That was as close as it would get. The Cougars blew the game open in the sixth inning with a seven-run outburst. Jack Dunn singled to start the rally and came around to score when Fruend launched a two-run home run to left field to push the lead to 6-2. Back-to-back walks and a hit batter loaded the bases for Shoulta, who laced an RBI single to center to make it 7-2. Marcinkiewicz then put the game out of reach with a towering grand slam, his second hit of the game, to push the Cougar advantage to 11-2. Columbia added two more insurance runs in the ninth when Fruend tripled home Nick Mullinax and later scored on a Bobcat error to round out the scoring.

Fruend led all hitters with three RBI while going 3-for-6 with a home run and a triple. Marcinkiewicz was 2-for-4 with four RBI and the go-ahead grand slam. The Cougars totaled 12 hits on the afternoon with Dunn, Shoulta, and Tyler Davis each contributing multiple knocks.
