Peterson Nets Two in Season Opener

FAYETTE, Mo. — The Columbia College men's soccer team dropped their season opener Wednesday, falling 3-2 to Central Methodist University (Mo.) at Davis Field.

Joshua Peterson wasted no time getting the Cougars on the board, scoring just 38 seconds into the match to make it 1-0. Central Methodist answered in the 12th minute when Matteo Giora found the net unassisted to tie the score at 1-1, and the match stayed level until midway through the second half.

Peterson struck again in the 68th minute to put Columbia back in front 2-1. But Central Methodist responded quickly, tying it at 2-2 in the 74th minute on a Robin Vandewalle goal assisted by Pelayo Suarez, before Samuel Výda netted the eventual game-winner just over a minute later in the 76th minute, assisted by Ignacio Mate, to put the Eagles ahead 3-2 for good.

Ricardo Fischbach made three saves in goal for Columbia, while Niccoló Cabras turned away eight shots on target for Central Methodist. The Cougars held a 16-15 edge in total shots but managed just two on frame after halftime.

Columbia (0-1-0) opens play at home on August 29th for a match up against Missouri Valley College at 2:30 p.m.
