SILOAM SPRINGS, Ark. — The Columbia College men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with No. 13 John Brown University on Saturday at Alumni Field, as Grant Buer's first-half goal was answered by a late equalizer from the Golden Eagles.
Columbia (5-1-1) struck first in the 16th minute. Faraj Shee set up Buer, who scored his fourth goal of the season to put the Cougars ahead 1-0. Columbia carried the lead into halftime, with John Brown's three first-half shots all turned away.
The Cougars pushed for a second goal after the break. Buer's header was blocked in the 62nd minute, and his shot in the 65th was stopped by a John Brown defender. Charlie Lafata forced a save from Golden Eagles goalkeeper Juan Almanza seconds later, and Drew Schlimme did the same in the 81st minute.
John Brown (4-1-1) tied it in the 84th minute. Off a corner kick, Wyatt Marksberry found the net for his first goal of the season. Ricardo Fischbach finished with six saves for Columbia, including three against Constantin Bauer in a span of less than two minutes, and the Cougars held on from there. The match was physical, with four yellow cards shown to each side.
With the draw, Columbia moves to 5-1-1 on the season and remains unbeaten in six matches. John Brown is 4-1-1.
The Cougars return home next to host Westminster College on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. at R. Marvin Owens Field.
