COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Columbia College volleyball team swept UHSP 25-18, 25-6, 25-18 on Saturday morning at the Arena of Southwell Complex, improving to 10-5 overall and 2-0 in American Midwest Conference play. The Eutectics fell to 3-11 overall and 2-1 in the AMC.
The Cougars hit .315 as a team, recording 49 kills against 15 errors on 108 attempts while holding UHSP to a .107 attack percentage. Columbia also held the edge in aces (10-2), blocks (6-3) and digs (49-38).
Columbia took the first five points of the opening set, four of them on Hannah Vogt's serve, including back-to-back aces. A Rowan Carr ace and kill made it 8-1 and drew a UHSP timeout. The Eutectics settled in from there but never got closer than four points. Carr had six kills in the set, and the Cougars served five aces (two each from Vogt and Carr, one from Taylor Johnson) to close out the 25-18 win despite hitting just .176.
The second set was a rout. Columbia hit .593 with 16 kills and no errors on 27 attempts, and UHSP managed just six points. An Alexa Olson ace pushed the lead to 10-3 and forced a UHSP timeout. Isabella Kincaid then stepped to the service line with Columbia up 11-4 and served 10 consecutive points, including two aces, to make it 21-4. Carr (five kills), Viola Giangreco (four) and Sophie Hurst (three) led the attack, and the Cougars added three blocks, the last a stuff of Ella Volkart by Giangreco and Alayna Backes to end it.
Set three stayed close early, with four ties through 4-4 and UHSP's only lead at 2-1, before Columbia took the lead for good at 5-4. The Cougars were up 9-7 when Addison Burroughs stepped to the service line and changed the set. Her first serve produced a Carr kill on a Burroughs assist, and back-to-back UHSP attack errors made it 12-7. That 4-0 run turned a one-point edge into a five-point lead and sent the Eutectics to a timeout. UHSP battled back to within two at 15-13, but Columbia answered with a 4-1 spurt to go up 19-14. Burroughs returned with the Cougars leading 21-17 and served two more points, the second on a Hurst block, for a 23-17 advantage. In all, she served seven times without a service error, and Columbia won five of those points. Giangreco had five of the set's 15 kills, and Vogt closed it out with an ace for the 25-18 finish.
Carr led all players with 13 kills on .550 hitting, and Giangreco added 12 kills at .417. Vogt and Olson combined for 38 assists, while Johnson anchored the back row with 17 digs.
