COLUMBIA, Mo. – The Columbia College volleyball team stayed perfect in American Midwest Conference play Wednesday, sweeping Mission University 25-7, 25-14, 25-16 at the Arena of Southwell Complex. The Cougars (12-5, 4-0 AMC) remain the last unbeaten team in the AMC, while the Patriots fell to 5-13 overall and 2-2 in league play.
Viola Giangreco turned in an efficient night at the net, leading Columbia with 8 kills on just 14 swings for a .571 hitting percentage.
Columbia set the tone early in the opening set, jumping out to a 6-1 lead behind back-to-back service aces from Rowan Carr, then closed the frame on a 9-0 run to finish it off 25-7. Hannah Vogt served out the set, capping the run with an ace of her own.
The Patriots hung tough in the second set, twice tying the score at 5-5 and later trimming a seven-point deficit to 21-14. Columbia answered right back with a kill from Kenedi Canty, a Mission attack error, and back-to-back kills from Giangreco to close out the 25-14 win.
In the third set, the Cougars raced to an early 9-2 lead behind Vogt's serving, which included two more aces. Mission chipped away and pulled within 23-16, but a Maria Streit kill off a Vogt set sealed the 25-16 win and the sweep.
As a team, Columbia hit .410 with 39 kills, 10 aces and 7 blocks. Vogt dished out 17 assists, and Carr filled the stat sheet with 4 kills, 4 aces, 9 digs and 2 blocks.
