Women’s soccer falls to Missouri Valley in double OT

Box Score Marshall, Mo. - The Columbia women's soccer team fell to non-conference opponent Missouri Valley College 3-2 on Tuesday evening. The Cougars fall to 3-1-1 on the year with the defeat, while the Vikings improve to 4-1-1.

Columbia was forced to play from behind for the first time this season after Breann Kinworthy put Missouri Valley in front, 1-0, with a goal in the 14th minute of the opening half. Both defenses finished the period strong and the Vikings took the 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

Missouri Valley grabbed a two-goal advantage just over ten minutes into the second half as Lais Pazzini snuck a shot past Cougar goalkeeper Erica Ramirez. Senior Stephanie Hale finally got Columbia on the board as she found the back of the net in the 67th minute of play. Less than five minutes later, Columbia provided the equalizer as junior Sandra Mendonca scored off an assist from Hale to even the score at 2-2. Ramirez would come up with a pair of saves over the final two minutes to keep the score and send the match into overtime.

Neither side was able to produce a goal in the first ten minutes of extra play as the Vikings outshot the Cougars 4-0. Missouri Valley was finally able to break through in the 104th minute of the contest as Michelle Plowman put in the game-winner to give Columbia their first loss of the 2013 campaign.

The Vikings dominated the Cougars with 19-8 advantage in the shot department, including 15-3 in shots on goal. Ramirez posted seven saves on the night, but took the hard-luck loss in goal for Columbia.

Earlier in the day, the Cougars received 39 votes in the first NAIA women's soccer top 25 poll of the regular season. Columbia is currently the only team receiving votes among the teams in the American Midwest Conference (AMC). The Cougars will be back in action next Tuesday, September 17th, when they to Benedictine University at Springfield (Ill.) for their AMC opener. Match time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. in Springfield, Ill.
