Box Score Baldwin City, Kan. - The Columbia women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 road victory over 23
rd-ranked Baker (Kan.) University on Monday night. The Cougars improve to 2-0-1 on the young season, while the Wildcats fall to 2-2.
Both squads narrowly missed a goal in the opening minutes as Columbia's Fabiola Diaz and Baker's Gabrielle Betsch each hit the post with a shot less than ten minutes into the contest. Junior MacKenzie Knepper, announced as the AMC Player of the Week on Monday, eventually gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead midway through the first period on an unassisted goal from the right wing. Baker would continue to apply pressure over the remainder of the half and outshot Columbia 8-4, including six shots on goal, but the Cougars took a 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.
The Wildcats continued to apply pressure in the second period, logging eight more shots during the final 45 minutes of play. However, the Columbia defense was up to the task and was able to complete their second shutout in three games to begin the year.
Baker outshot the Cougars 16 (9 shots on goal) to 7 (4 shots on goal) for the match. Junior
Erica Ramirez, this week's AMC Defensive Player of the Week, earned the win with nine saves in goal for Columbia.
The Cougars will be back at it on Saturday, September 7
th when they travel to Dordt (Iowa) College. Match time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in Sioux Center, Iowa.
