No. 13 Cougar Volleyball Tops Hannibal-LaGrange in Straight Sets; Moves up one Spot in NAIA Top 25

Columbia, Mo. – The 13th ranked Cougar Volleyball team won its fifth straight game tonight, defeating conference foe Hannibal-LaGrange University by a score of 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-22). Columbia improves to 25-4 overall and 7-2 in the American Midwest Conference (AMC) with the victory, while the Trojans fall to 5-23 overall and 3-5 in league play.

Columbia had another efficient night offensively as they hit .393 as a team. The Trojans were not quite as efficient as they hit .087. The Cougars also collected 3.0 total blocks and six aces.

Brooke Simpson did much of the heavy lifting on the attack with 13 kills while Polina Severina also finished in double figures with 10 kills. Brooke Simpson was also active on the defensive end as she had a match-high 12 digs to pick up the double-double along with two aces. Lydie van Deursen led all players with 33 assists.

Columbia moved up one spot to No. 13 in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, released by the national office today. Rocky Mountain (Mont.) held onto the nation's No. 1 ranking for the seventh-straight week earning all 21 first-place votes and 591 points. Park University moved up to No. 2 from No. 3 while Concordia and Texas at Brownsville tied for the No. 3 spot. Biola (Calif.) rounded out the top five. Fellow American Midwest Conference (AMC) member school Missouri Baptist University moved up five spots to No. 7 making their first top 10 appearance since 2006.

The Cougars will wrap up the week with four matches in Georgetown Ky. on Friday and Saturday. Columbia will square off against Bryan College and No. 17 Georgetown University at 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on Friday and take on Viterbo University and (RV) Indiana Wesleyan University on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
