Box Score St. Louis, Mo. - The Cougar women's soccer team defeated Missouri Baptist University 2-1 in an American Midwest Conference (AMC) match up this afternoon on the road. Columbia improves to 14-3 on the year and 11-0 in league play with the win, while also clinching their third consecutive AMC regular season championship in just the fourth season of the program.
The Cougars dominated the ball in the first half, outshooting the Spartans 10-2 and put five on the net, but couldn't get on the board as the game remained scoreless headed into the halftime break.
Less than four minutes into the second half,
Tiffany Weaver scored her 13
th goal of the season to put Columbia ahead 1-0.
Kelli Westhues was credited with the assist.
The Spartans were able to find the equalizer in the 57
th minute as Donna Jolliff found the upper right corner of the net on a penalty kick after a hand ball in the box.
In the 79
th minute, AMC leading scorer
Laurie Frew notched her 20
th goal of the season on a penalty kick of her own after a foul by the Spartans to put the Cougars back on top.
The Columbia defense held the Spartans scoreless over the remainder of the game, as they held on for their seventh straight victory.
The Cougars outshot the Spartans 25 (14 on-goal) to six (two on-goal) for the match. Junior goalkeeper
Flavia Rosado (14-3) registered the win, saving one shot on goal.
This afternoon's victory not only gives the Cougars home field advantage for the AMC postseason tournament, but also guarantees Columbia an automatic bid to the NAIA National Championships, earning one of the AMC's two automatic bids.
Columbia will travel to Hannibal, Mo. on Wednesday, October 28
th to close out their regular season schedule against American Midwest Conference (AMC) foe Hannibal-LaGrange University. The Cougars and Trojans will kick off at 1:00 p.m.
